In the state of Florida, the Department of Environmental Protection created a program in 2004 titled 'The Florida Green Lodging' program. It was established to encourage lodging facilities to protect and conserve Florida's natural resources. The program encompasses a list of various environmental initiatives that are specific to the environment of Florida. Once lodging facilities have been initiated into the program, new goals are set each year to make a more positive impact and go beyond the basic initiatives such as water and energy conservation and the linen exchange program.
Fourteen hotels in Collier County so far have received their official Green Lodging Designation, with two properties, the Hilton Naples and the Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort & Spa having just achieved the more prestigious 'Two Palm' designation due to their increased measures in conservation.
