The Naples Daily News profiles the discovery this week of an orchid, Cyclopogon elatus, in the Fakahatchee Strand that has not been seen in Florida since 1961.
It was about lunch time, and the three men had been traipsing through the swamp at Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park for a couple of hours. Little did they know they were about to step into the botanical history books with the rediscovery of a lost orchid species...

IN THE FAKAHATCHEE STRAND - The visitors are barely out of their cars before the chorus starts: "I just want to see a ghost orchid!"
The ghost orchid is among the world's rarest flowers, the star of the popular book The Orchid Thief and the movie Adaptation and is the biggest lure to the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park in southwest Florida.
