Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades is blessed with breathtaking natural beauty. Perhaps the aura of this tropical paradise serves as an attraction for artists and those that love art. With over 100 galleries in Greater Naples, the region is definitely on the map as a cultural destination. In fact, Naples was recently named the #1 Small Art Town in America.
From the outstanding permanent collections and traveling exhibits at the
Naples Museum of Art, the
von Liebig Art Center and the
Marco Island Center for the Arts, to the eclectic array of galleries located in the
Fifth Avenue South and
Third Street South shopping districts, to the
Big Cypress Gallery deep in the Everglades, you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful art. Many artists are in residence at studio galleries, while other galleries serve to inspire or provide art for home and special gifts. There are also hundreds of art and cultural events happening in the area every month. For a complete schedule of arts related events, visit the
United Arts Council's Web page.
There is also a distinct appreciation here for the performing arts. The
Philharmonic Center for the Arts is the premiere performance hall in the region and is home to the Naples Philharmonic. The Naples Players, one of the top community theaters in the nation, has two performance stages in their state-of-the-art theater on Fifth Avenue South in downtown Naples.
History buffs will find fascinating displays of artifacts and information dating from the height of the Calusa Indian civilization over a thousand years ago in
area museums. Also of interest is the story of the pioneers who made their way to the Southwest Florida wilderness to settle just prior to the turn of the century. And a number of tour companies specialize in helping you to experience the natural beauty of the area that is such an inspiration to area artists.
