Some musical pairings are nothing short of sublime, and this program proves it. Although Mendelssohn never had the opportunity to meet Beethoven, the brilliant younger composer was heavily influenced by the musical titan. This performance by musicians of the Naples Philharmonic features two chamber masterpieces for strings: Beethoven’s String Trio No. 2 in D Major, Op. 9, No.2, and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E Minor, Op. 44, No. 2. The program opens with Beethoven’s string trio, a violin-focused work that moves from a courtly dance to a more upbeat conclusion, transitioning perfectly into Mendelssohn’s string quartet, filled with the composer’s signature frenetic energy and delightful melodies.
