    Red Tide Report

The latest red tide tests show the organism that causes red tide, Karenia brevis, has been detected in waterways around Marco Island and some Naples beaches.

Forecast: Respiratory irritation is possible at beaches between Bonita Beach and Cape Romano through Thursday, October 17th. People with chronic respiratory illnesses such as asthma or emphysema should avoid going to the beach as these illnesses may be aggravated. While these conditions exist, take advantage of our many inland activities such as attractions, restaurants, shopping, art galleries, and museums.

Conditions can change daily. For detailed reports on beaches, check the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission's interactive Red Tide Status Map with daily sampling results; or the Mote Marine red tide status maps at

    Facts About Red Tide

Red Tide is a naturally-occurring organism and blooms begin offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Winds and tides can move red tide closer to beaches and inlets. When red tide blooms the Karenia brevis organism releases a toxic substance into the water and the air that can cause respiratory irritation in humans and can kill fish and sea life. Review the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium's informative Red Tide FAQ.
