The Naples Philharmonic concludes the 2022-23 Masterworks series with two musical interpretations of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as Latvian guest conductor Andris Poga makes his debut with the orchestra. The program opens with Tchaikovsky’s telling of the tragedy, a dualistic fantasy-overture filled with themes of strife between families and the enraptured romance between the two lovers. Prokofiev’s ballet, based on the same story, remains among the composer’s most popular scores today. Also on the program, the orchestra is joined by Macedonian piano virtuoso Simon Trpčeski for a performance of Shostakovich’s delightful and charming Piano Concerto No. 2, a playful and lighthearted piece written as a birthday present for his son Maxim — and certainly a memorable way to close out a season!
