Playing Beethoven "His Way" at Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church

Though performing music on the instrument for which it was written might seem like an unproblematic idea, this lecture explores with the audience the many philosophical difficulties in fact inherent in the so-called "early music movement" – a movement in the 20th century that sought to revive old instruments and their performing practices that were believed to have been lost through history.

The lecture will include live illustrations on two representative examples of late 18th and early 19th century pianos from the Viennese tradition – courtesy of the Cornell Center for Historical Keyboards.
