Immokalee
Immokalee is a study in contrasts. It's home to the action-packed Seminole Casino Hotel and the Immokalee Regional Raceway, but this unincorporated town is decidedly rural in character. It draws visitors to its fresh produce stands, authentic Mexican restaurants and outdoor attractions such as Lake Trafford, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Pepper Ranch Preserve, and Pioneer Museum at Roberts Ranch.
Immokalee has seen its share of hunters, trappers, cowmen and missionaries since it was first settled in the late 1800s. Its name means “my home” in the Seminole language, a nod to one of two Indian tribes that occupied the area - the ancient Calusa tribe were early occupants. As the largest inland community in Collier County, it has a thriving agriculture industry. Large farms produce a large amount of the United State's fresh produce in the growing season from November-April. Immokalee's walkable downtown features the First Street Zocalo, a plaza including benches, shaded areas and a bandstand. Enjoy a little R&R while exploring the quaint town's shops and restaurants. Since undergoing a successful environmental restoration, Lake Trafford is regaining its previous status as a top bass fishing destination.
Signature events in Immokalee include many live concerts and other special events at the Seminole Casino Hotel, full-moon hikes with Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW) Land & Water Trust, the Immokalee Cattle Drive & Jamboree (March), Immokalee Harvest Festival (April), the Sunflower Festival (October) and the Christmas Around the World Parade (December).
