Wildlife Filmmaker and Conservationist, Andy Casagrande, partners with Pure Florida to research sharks off the coast of Naples

NAPLES, Fla. (December 16, 2022) – Sunday, December 11, 2022, Pure Florida hosted Andy Brandy Casagrande IV and his team of divers and photographers to learn more about marine life living off the coast of Naples, Florida.

Andy Brandy Casagrande IV brings his love of marine wildlife and passion for conservation to his hometown, Naples, Florida with a high-level goal to monitor the presence, abundance and migration movement of a variety of shark species that live and migrate through Naples and the Gulf of Mexico. This data will create a better understanding of shark movement locally to better protect sharks here in Florida and around the world. The key target species of the study are Great White Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks, Bull Sharks, Mako Sharks, Whales Sharks and essentially any sharks that frequent to pass through the waters off  the coast of Naples, Florida.

The team departed from Tin City aboard Pure Florida’s M/V SEA FLIGHT II and deployed multiple shark tracking systems.  At each stop, Casagrande and his team of scuba divers dove to place an ultrasonic receiver.  The stops included approximately 15 miles northeast off the coast of Collier County, further about 25 miles with another stop roughly 40 miles off the coast of Marco Island and then returned back near Gordon Pass.

The receivers are an acoustic array, consisting of multiple “shark listening stations” known as VR2Ws, a global standard of ultrasonic receivers used by current shark researchers around the world to track and study tagged marine life equipped with ultra-sonic transmitters, also a global standard. Deployment of the receivers in strategic locations offshore & inshore, allow for collecting data to build a baseline study of the amazing sharks that live and thrive right here in Naples

This is just the start of the study for Casagrande and his ABC4EXPLORE company. “I really look forward to expanding this study, working alongside local conservation groups and college students at local universities.  My life’s work has been documenting marine life to inspire people to care about our oceans and I am thrilled to be doing what I love in my hometown”, said Andy Casagrande.   Casagrande will be looking to raise additional funding to increase the acoustic array of VR2Ws, “shark listening stations”, and also work to recruit a team of local researchers & university students to help analyze the data and officially expand the baseline study.  All data acquired will be shared to the iTAG and FACT networks and will be made available to any scientist or research organizations looking to collaborate.

“When Andy called looking for some help, we were happy to assist.  He is a great guy, a Naples local and loves the water just like we do,” said Harry Julian, owner Pure Florida.  Pure Florida owners Lance and Harry Julian have known Andy Brandy Casagrande IV for many years through their work in the film industry.  The Julians were thrilled to work with Casagrande while filming the documentary “Paradise Reef”.  The documentary tells the story about Naples residents working together to install over 30 artificial reefs off the coast of Collier County.  Paradise Reef was directed by John Scoular and produced by the Julians and won the 2016 Suncoast Regional Emmy Award in the Topical Documentary category.  The film industry work is in addition to the fleet of 20 vessels docked at historic Tin City that take guests from around the world Deep Sea Fishing, Backwater Calm Bay Fishing, on Sightseeing or Sunset Cruises, Dolphin, Eco & Island Shelling Tours to Keewaydin Island along with Boat Rentals, Jet Ski Rentals and Private Charters.  To learn more about Pure Florida visit www.PureFL.com or by calling 239.263.4949.
