July 28, 2025, Marco Island: Marco Island Center for the Arts’ Arts Center Theatre is proud to present “Marjory Stoneman Douglas: A Voice for the Everglades,” a powerful one-woman show written by Janina Birtolo, directed by Frank Blocker, and starring award-winning actress Melissa Hennig. Performances will take place on August 16 and 17, 2025.
This timely and compelling production brings to life the indomitable spirit of Marjory Stoneman Douglas—author, journalist, and groundbreaking environmental activist. Best known for her pivotal 1947 book The Everglades: River of Grass, Douglas helped reframe national perception of the Everglades from a worthless swamp to a vital ecological treasure. Her activism in defense of Florida’s natural resources was unmatched, and her legacy continues to inspire.
The play follows Marjory through her long and fascinating life, capturing her wit, determination, and charm. “The script beautifully balances Douglas’ environmental message with her quirky, spunky personality,” shares actress Melissa Hennig. “As someone who’s spent over two decades as an Environmental Specialist in Collier County, portraying her is a deep honor for me.”
Director Frank Blocker, fresh off a Fringe Fort Myers Audience Choice Award win with Hennig, adds: “Janina Birtolo has a gift for breathing life into historical women. This play feels like a TED Talk with Marjory herself in the room. Melissa is the perfect fit—not only as a performer, but as someone who genuinely understands the importance of this story.”
A familiar face to Marco Island audiences, Melissa Hennig has appeared in past Arts Center Theatre productions including The 39 Steps, Vanities, and Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some!). This fall, she’ll also appear in Ada and the Engine with The Naples Players.
Audiences will have the opportunity to participate in a talkback with Hennig following the performance—an insightful discussion on the play, Marjory's legacy, and the ongoing environmental issues facing Florida today, including the recent lawsuit filed by “Friends of the Everglades,” the organization Douglas founded.
“Marjory didn’t begin her crusade for the Everglades until she was 80. Her life is a testament to what passion and perseverance can achieve—at any age,” says Blocker. Marjory’s story is more than history—it’s a call to action.
