Opera Naples Announces performances of Gilbert and Sullivan’s "The Mikado" by the Opera Naples Youth Summer program on July 19 and 20 at 7 pm, and July 21 at 2 pm, at the Wang Opera Center, featuring new stadium theater seating.
NAPLES, FL (June 12, 2024): Opera Naples is thrilled to announce upcoming performances of "The Mikado" by the talented members of the Opera Naples Youth Summer program. This classic operetta, penned by the legendary duo Gilbert and Sullivan, will be presented on July 19 and 20 at 7 pm, and a matinee performance on July 21 at 2 pm at the renovated Wang Opera Center, featuring newly installed stadium theater seating. "The Mikado" offers a satirical take on British society through the lens of a fictional Japanese town, weaving a tale of love, humor, and political intrigue. It remains one of the most popular works of Gilbert and Sullivan, known for its catchy melodies and sharp wit. The program is led by New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players veteran, Louis Dall'Ava, Stage Director, and Opera Naples Director of Education, Robin Shuford Frank.
"The Mikado" will feature vibrant piano accompaniment, thanks to a generous donation of a performance-quality Schimmel grand piano from Michele Peppe, a well-known local real estate expert. Michele's decision to donate the piano came after a heartfelt journey, as she shared, "When our dear friend passed away and left this magnificent instrument to us, we hoped it would end up somewhere where it would be loved and appreciated." Her encounter with Opera Naples was serendipitous, leading to the piano finding a new home where it continues to impact productions and student training.
"All our educational programs and vocal training have seen a significant enhancement thanks to this instrument,” states Robin. “The presence of a high-quality piano is crucial in the world of music education. It allows students to experience the nuances of sound that only a superior instrument can provide, setting a standard of excellence and inspiring them to reach their full potential. Having lost several pianos in the hurricane, we are deeply grateful for this donation, most recently used during our student “Lemonade!” program. The impact of this gift will continue to resonate through the upcoming performances of "The Mikado" and beyond.”
The Opera Naples Youth Summer program's rendition promises to bring a fresh and vibrant energy to this beloved masterpiece. This two-week summer music enrichment program makes performance arts accessible to young students, providing them with invaluable skills that extend far beyond the stage. Opera Naples invites the community to join in celebrating the arts and the bright future of these young performers. Tickets for "The Mikado" are available now, promising an enchanting experience for audiences of all ages.
Tickets $28. Student $13 tickets are available by phone or at the door.
