The comic genius of Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers and the charming Ealing comedies are but the tip of the iceberg of an extraordinary period of British filmmaking after World War II. In this lecture, we examine the “angry young men” movement, the Beatles, Hammer Film Production’s gothic horror films, Merchant Ivory Productions’ retelling of the classics and actors like Helen Mirren, Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh, who became stars on this side of the Atlantic as British film gained more international acclaim.
