Conducting his first Naples Philharmonic Masterworks performance since his appointment, Sharon and Timothy Ubben Artistic and Music Director Designate Alexander Shelley returns to Naples to conduct an emotionally intense program beginning and ending with some of Richard Strauss’ finest works. The program opens with Don Juan, a tone poem telling the musical tale of the legendary libertine. Korngold’s Violin Concerto follows, featuring the return of young violin virtuoso Blake Pouliot, whose energy and talent perfectly complement the work’s soaring melodies. After performing Gubaidulina’s Fairytale Poem with its haunting sonic landscape, Alexander and the orchestra conclude the performance with another of Strauss’ melodic tone poems, Death and Transfiguration, exploring the themes of life, death and the afterlife.
