The Rink at TheatreZone
The musical is about the strained and estranged relationship between a mother and daughter. The emotionally heavy musical has an extraordinary score by the renowned Kander and Ebb, retro dance styles and even roller skating. A cast of six male performers, The Wreckers, offer levity with dance routines and also play females.
The mother in The Rink, Anna, is played by TheatreZone co-founder and associate artistic director Karen Molnar Danni, who also choreographs the show. Anna is a fiery Italian and the owner of a failing roller skating rink in a Coney Island-style boardwalk park. She's ready to move on with her life when her free-spirited daughter, Angel, played by Sarah Beth Ganey, decides to return home to reconnect with her past.
This is the first production of The Rink as originally written in 40 years. The 1984 production's licensing had not been available and is being produced at TheatreZone with the express consent of composer John Kander through a personal connection of Mark Danni, TheatreZone's founding artistic director. Kander subsequently made the show available to other theatre companies.
