The Fakahatchee Strand is the largest of all the strand swamps in Florida. The preserve is haven for the highest concentration of bromeliad and orchid species in the United States. Many of the strand's 5 to 7 thousand Royal Palms can be seen along W.J. Janes Memorial Scenic Drive. A leisurely drive along Janes Scenic Drive has rewarded visitors with an assortment of wildlife observations including; Red-shouldered Hawk, woodpeckers, Barred Owl, raccoon, turtles, Florida banded water snake, alligator, Virginia opossum, deer, bobcat, otter, Everglades Mink, Black Bear, and even an occasional Florida Panther.
